With all the nonsense about the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell-Jill Kelley-John Allen-Unnamed FBI agent affair going on here’s “How to Tell if you’re Involved in the Petraeus Scandal”  Ha.  The New Yorker Blog

I’ve never read anything by scholar, activist, teacher and journalist Fred Halliday, but maybe I should.  His focus was the Middle East–its politics and revolutions.  According to Susan Linfield in The Nation he “believed that the duty of committed intellectuals is to keep their eyes open, to learn from history, to be humble enough to be surprised (and to admit being wrong). The alternative was what he called “Rip van Winkle socialism.” He sometimes told his friends, “At my funeral the one thing no one must ever say is that ‘Comrade Halliday never wavered, never changed his mind.” The Nation
